Cotswold Houses, Towers, Churches and Castles part 1

In this blog post we are going to take a look at some of the incredible historic buildings you can see whilst hiking on The Cotswold Way. Starting from Chipping Campden walking south on The Cotswold Way route. We have provided brief descriptions together with website links for each attraction.

Broadway Tower

Broadway Tower

Broadway Tower is a folly, a building built largely for decoration, on Broadway Hill. It was designed by James Wyatt and built for Lady Coventry in 1798-1799. The tower is 65 feet high and 1024 feet above sea level.

Snowshill Manor

Snowshill Manor is a sixteenth-century country house. It is now a National Trust property. It was owned by Charles Wade, an eccentric, whose collection of objects can be seen in the property today.

Stanway House

Stanway House

Stanway House is a Jacobean Manor House. Originally built in the 16th Century, It is a Grade one listed building. The gardens now feature a 300 feet fountain in the gardens. The tallest fountain in Britain and second highest in Europe.

Hailes Abbey

On The Cotswold Way Hailes Abbey

Hailes Abbey is the remains of an abbey originally built in 1246. Now owned by The National Trust it was the site of holy pilgrimage. The Abbey was said to contain a phial of Holy Blood.

Sudeley Castle

Sudelely Castle & Gardens

Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe was built in the 15th Century. It is likely built on the site of an earlier castle. The chapel in the grounds was the burial place of Catherine Parr, sixth wife of King Henry the Eighth.
