The History Of The Cotswold Way

The Cotswold Way route was first mentioned around 50 years ago when it was suggested by some Gloucestershire based Ramblers. An early guide was produced by Mark Richards in 1973.

It was officially inaugurated as a National Trail on 24 May 2007.

So What Has The Cotswold Way Got To Offer?

Well, for a start it offers 102 miles of spectacular scenery, stunning villages and a glimpse in to the England of old.

The route runs between Chipping Campden and Bath and meanders through or near Old Sodbury, Wotton Under Edge, Dursley, Painswick, Winchcombe, Stanway and Broadway, as well as many other villages.

It also passes a huge number of places of interest, including the Somerset Monument, Sudeley Castle and the Broadway Tower.

If You Don’t Want To Walk It, You Can Run It

The Cotswold Way is run annually as a 10-stage relay from north to south, usually in late June or early July.

In September, the Cotswold Way is also run as a single stage race from north to south

The official record for running the Cotswold Way is held by Nathan Montegue of Swindon Harriers, who ran from Chipping Campden to Bath in 19 hours and 31 minutes in 2014.

When Is The Best Time To Walk?

Spring, Autumn and Summer months. Each of these seasons has its own recommendations. If you don’t mind the weather, Winter is pretty special too.

How Difficult Is It?

Compared to many hiking routes the difficulty level of The Cotswold Way is easy/moderate. The landscape is rolling hills with fantastic views each day. The high point is approx. 300 metres above sea level. Nothing too strenuous but there are many ascents and descents on the route. If you want to walk it over 6 or 7 days, that can be a challenge. 8 or more hiking days give you the chance to spend more time exploring your surroundings.
